A Day in the Life @ 2Life

Matt has worked the front desk at 2Life's Brighton Campus for over two years, and the last two months have tested him and 2Life in ways no one could have imagined. Here is Matt’s report from the front line of keeping our residents safe.

On a typical day, I am at the Brighton Campus by 8:00 AM; by the time I get in, the kitchen staff has already been working for almost four hours. This morning, we are delivering a full week of meals to over 40 people, and there’s a lot to get together. The chefs will be delivering their meals, but we’re also preparing additional cooked lunches, bags of produce, and healthy frozen meals from our on-site stock. I make sure the meals are on track, then set to work organizing our Helping Hands—paid temporary staff who've answered the call to help our residents during this crisis. Between mail, laundry, and meals, we have a lot to deliver today. And, of course, everything has to be sanitized first.

The meals are ready around 10:00 AM. Everyone gets seven healthy meals and seven protein bars each week. I double-check that each package has a diverse set of entrees, make sure all the Helping Hands have gloves and masks, then send the Helping Hands on their way. Each of us takes a section of the campus, and we divide up the deliveries. The mail came last night, so there’s a lot to sort and deliver. Even though we do contactless pickup, it’s nice to catch up with residents through their doors.

We finally finish delivering food and mail around 1:00 PM, which is perfect timing because the laundry just arrived. Since our laundry rooms are communal, we’ve been doing all of our residents’ laundry off-site, and is has been a huge hit! We’re already doing around 40 bags in all of our five buildings. I ask the delivery woman to sign in, according to our detailed COVID-19 protocols.

After a quick break for our Helping Hands—just enough time for me to organize the laundry bags—we start off on one more round of pickup and delivery. Two of our Helping Hands swap the dirty laundry with the clean, and it takes some organization to make sure that we know which bags belong to which residents. Around 5:00 PM, I can send the Helping Hands home after thanking them profusely. We certainly couldn’t do this without their help.

As I walk home, I think about our residents; they have been so understanding and encouraging, and I really couldn’t do this without their support. I’m looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow!
