Raising the Roof 2019

Social commentator Fran Lebowitz, MA Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg join in community conversation on aging

Raising the Roof

Boston, MA – October 28, 2019 – 2Life Communities leadership were joined by hundreds of community members at the Marriott Copley Place yesterday for Raising the Roof, a community conversation on optimal aging. The event was emceed by former Staples CEO Shira Goodman, and featured author, journalist, and social observer Fran Lebowitz. Interviewed by 2Life President and CEO Amy Schectman, Lebowitz’s sharp wit brought the challenges and opportunities of aging into focus for an audience of 500+ supporters of 2Life’s “aging in community” model.

2Life also presented the inaugural L’Dor Vador (Generation to Generation) Award to three generations of women: MA Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg; her mother, Carol R. Goldberg; and her daughter, Meredith S.G. Winter. “2Life Communities is an absolute gem,” said the Treasurer. “Their work ensures that as people age, they are given the opportunity to retain their dignity and continue to live lives of meaning and purpose—what we all aspire to for our parents, ourselves, and even our children someday.”

The conversation at Raising the Roof marked the launch of the Aging in Community Collaborative (AiCC). 2Life will foster an ongoing, public dialogue about ways to age affordably and live well. “Through this collaborative,” said 2Life President/CEO Amy Schectman, “we will encourage widespread community conversations, share the results of research and experience, and hear what people aspire for as they enter this phase of life. We will go beyond the grounds of our existing campuses to reach across the economic spectrum so that no one is left out.”

Upcoming AiCC events include a presentation on active aging with Joy Loverde, author of Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old? and The Complete Eldercare Planner, on November 20; and a talk on December 5 with Marc Freedman, President, CEO, and Founder of Encore.org, which encourages society to tap into the talent and experience of older adults.

Raising the Roof was supported by Visionary Sponsor Dellbrook|JKS and a host of other generous community leaders. 2Life is grateful for their commitment to providing superior housing that is broadly affordable to older adults across Greater Boston.

About 2Life Communities

2Life Communities, a nonprofit organization founded in 1965, operates on the belief that all seniors should have the opportunity to live a full life of connection and purpose in a dynamic, supportive environment – a model we call aging in community, which directly combats the growing public health crisis of social isolation and loneliness amongst older adults. At 2Life Communities, residents can step out the doors of their own apartments and find friendship, community, physical and intellectual stimulation, and a helping hand day or night. Serving a diverse population of over 1,600 older adults, 2Life creates communities with a laser sharp focus on affordability – a tremendous concern given that Massachusetts is the state with the 2nd largest gap in the U.S. between seniors’ median income and the cost of living.
