"I can't think of two better people who have graced this community with their presence, their compassion, and their willingness to become deeply and actively involved in its public life." Governor Michael S. Dukakis
We are pleased to announce that Helen and Rudy Kass have been selected as the 2014 AJAS Trustees of the Year. AJAS (the Association of Jewish Aging Services), an association of non-profit, community-based organizations rooted in Jewish values, promotes and supports the delivery of services to seniors. This award recognizes trustees from AJAS member organizations who have enriched the lives of Jewish elders and have provided outstanding leadership within their organization and the wider community.
Helen and Rudy exemplify all that the award encompasses. They have actively been building and shaping JCHE throughout the organization's nearly 50 years. With their intelligence, dedication, and effectiveness, they have been leaders in enabling JCHE to offer exceptional supportive, affordable housing.
Rudy's leadership began in 1966, very soon after the organization was founded. As legal counsel, he facilitated the development of JCHE's first four properties. In 1979, Governor Michael S. Dukakis appointed Rudy as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court. Despite the demands of this prestigious position, Rudy remained involved with JCHE. He joined the board in 1979 and served as chair from 1987 - 1990 and remains an active member today. Throughout his tenure on the board, Rudy has served as a member of the Real Estate Development Committee, which has played a pivotal role in all of JCHE's expansion.
Helen has also assumed an indispensable role in the development of JCHE. In the late 1970s, she participated on a newly-formed committee to develop services that would help residents to remain at JCHE as their needs changed. Helen joined the board in 1984 and has continued to offer her impressive expertise to support JCHE residents. Most recently she was chosen by fellow Board members to serve on a planning committee that was responsible for creating an organization-wide strategic plan.
We are grateful to Rudy and Helen for the stability and institutional memory they have brought to JCHE throughout the years. As the need for senior housing has grown, the Kasses have offered much-needed wisdom, strength, and vision.
